my friends mini van shuts down when stopping at a red light or a stop sign, anyone know what the problem is? it starts out just fine and runs just fine, but when coming to a stop, the car would shut down, then you would have to re-start it again. A friend mechanic says it was the fuel pump, but then he changed his mind and said it could've been some bad wires connected to the battery somehow?? anyone know anything about this? any help would be appreciated, thanks

Sounds like it could be a bad Throttle Position Sensor. That would be my first guess.

I had a Geo Metro that would do that... turns out it was water in the gas tank that would slosh forward over the fuel pump inlet during braking.

To fix a bad TPS, you will need to buy a new one (20 to 30$ roughly at a place like autozone) and swap them out. It is bolted into the side of the throttle body with 2 star-screws usually. It is opposite side the throttle body from where the throttle cables meet it.
