K&N filter causing SES light?

I recently put a K&N cone filter on my 98 GP GT and when i drove it the SES light came on. AT first I had just the AIT sensor just sitting in the pipe unconected, then took the piece out of the stock hose , put it in the rubber grommit thats in the pipe for the K&N filter and connected it. Still the SES light is on. Any one know if the setup is causing this? Seems odd that a different filter would be the cause.

Best thing to do is get it odb-ii scanned for DTC error codes and go from there. Could be the IAT or MAF sensor. Did you use any K & N air filter oil? Getting a SES light after putting on intake mods is common.

Like BNAYLOR said...get it scanned...Go to AutoZone and get it for free...Ive learned that even after problem is corrected that SES ...sometimes needs to be reset...

GM has a TSB on using K&N air filters on their v6 engines. They say that with excessive oiling, the oil can travel up the intake tube and mess with the intake temp sensor and the mass air flow sensor. Which caused a SES light or even drivability problems.
Take your car to AutoZone and get it scanned. If you have a MAF or IAT sensor codes, then that might be your problem.

I have NOT used any type of air filter oil as that wasnt in the instructions. Is it necessary? If so then the post by mobil 12 kicks in. Damned if i do, damnned if i dont?

The K & N 's come pre-oiled and ready to install. The only time you need to use oil is when you recharge the filter which is usually every 6 months. I think the recharge kit is around $10.

I agree but I clean mine monthly and replace the cone filter every 6 months but thats based on my circumstances and maintenance program. There are are 2 kits available:

K&N Part # 99-5000 with the aerosol oil spray and filter cleaner

K&N Part # 99-5050 with squeeze bottle of oil and filter cleaner

Both cost around $10.00. However, do not use the one with the squeeze bottle oil. Its a mess. The aerosol spray is much better.
