drain and refill fluid
if that doesnt help, buy a new tranny
it kinda sounds like your tranny fluid is basically dead and the only thing that makes it even lubricate is when its cold and still a little thick, but when it heats and thins out it does basically nothing

might be a good idea to replace the clutch if thats what they say it is,(and it might be 600$ depending on the size of the shop's collective dick that they rape their customers with) but if they replace it and it doesnt help feel free to tear them a new one
but seriously there could be a number of different possibilities.
try and find someone who knows all this to adjust your clutch cable, look at the clutch disc, look at the fluid, check the master cylinder and slave cylinder, ect. for free to see exactly whats wrong before you go dumping money around

Replacing the tranny fluid is gunna be a LOT cheaper than fitting a clutch... Try it first and then make your decision based on the outcome.
The clutch would prevent engagement if it has been abused and slips when hot.
