jetta question

I m thinking of buying a jetta .dont know much about these cars .im intrested in jetta i seen in the auto trader. its a 02 VW jetta 1.8 turbo for $9.800 .is that a fair price ? and hows the jetta in gas.its an hour drive from and back to work .

Jettas are nice cars tight suspension, long lasting durable mechanically. The resale values are very good. But the electronics in the car suck. The service centers are full of retards and parts are expensive.

Depends on the mileage and how well the car was maintained. The 1.8T will pull almost 40mpg on the highway and high 20's around the city. It's got plenty of snot (nearly 180hp +-). The parts are definately more money than a ford because it's a euro. The electronics are also very sensitive, and a problem can be very hard to find/fix. my 00 jetta vr6 is coming up on 200k miles, it's treated me very well. my sisters 01 jetta 1.8T is well over 100k miles and also took good care of her.

I put 40,000 hard miles on my jetta in the past 9 months at about 32mpg on really rough Mass highways and she still drives like the day I got her. She starts without hesitation in any temp even if I leave the lights on all night/ day. She goes good in the snow and I take her to my favorite fishing spot through the woods a couple times a week. So far I have replaced the rear brakes (I think the last owner left the e-brake on a while) some bulbs, a windows wash level sensor, and a hazard switch. I have a squeek in the front, my directionals tick when the directional is not on, and my engine light comes on every now and then when its humid with an emissions code (O2 sensor). At 70K, if it were an american car I would say its a lemon. Since its euro I will say its quirky. My girl has a Jetta a couple years older that has similar whackyness.

I have a 02 jetta 1.8t and will say the same thing here. I put 50k miles on it in 2 years and have had a lot pf small problems,all taken care of by the dealer. I now have an extended warranty because the parts are VERY expensive and I do not trust the car. The mileage is around 17 city, 22 highway on mine. At 3000 rpm it is only doing 75 on the highway. My acura is geared better and does 90mph at the same rpm.

The local VW service department is very poor. The mechanics are good, just the service writers and management suck. No sales or service commitment here.

The car has a lot of go primarily because of the power to weight ratio and drive gear. I have run many a Mustang GT in the ground, both out of the hole and topend (about 135mph)
