plexiglass floor

I got the idea of cutting out the floor of a car (probably mine when i get one but my neighbors looks like a good candidate, they just moved in) just a 1.5ftX1.5ft square at the front and back passenger and driver sides, placing some plexiglass in the hole, and maybe get some white lights underneeth the hole to illuminate the road. I also don't want this to be just a peice bolted onto the floor, i want it to look nice.

first, what thickness should i use, i want this to be safe and i also don't want it to get damaged too easily so what should i do to protect it (i was thinking a mudguard type thing the's out of sight but blocks small rocks and stuff to prevent scratches)? second, how much would it cost for a 3ftX3ft peice of this thickness? how much would lights cost for that size (24 ft in total)?

I would go like 1/2", but its going to get scratched up very very easy. Check Select Products (google for web address... probably selectproducts.com though if thats spelt right) for price. Lights I would go cold cathode, about $20 for two 12" bulbs. I dont know how your going to protect it from scratches is the main thing, a flap infront of it would be pretty useless becuase most of the stuff is going to be bouncing before it hits it. You could try that stuff they put on cars to protect the paint from rock chips, its like a clear vinyl stuff. You will need to protect the top and bottom because shoes will scuff it.
