I recently took my 94 altima to get a smog test done. It passed the test but the next day when I went to start the car the check engine light came on and when I started to drive it I notice that the speedometer and the odometer didn't work. also the brake lights would not turn off. I am trying to figure out if the problems started b/c of the smog test or is it just coincidence that all that happened.

The check eng light and speedometer problems are caused by the VSS vehicle speed sensor or a bad connection at the sensor plug to the wire harness. The VSS is in the transmission near the starter and half-shaft axle. The brake lights staying on (when the headlights are not on?) Is caused by the stop light switch under the dash by the brake pedal. You should be able to adjust the switch. Niether problem is directly related to emisions testing. You can find pictures of both parts at http://www.rockauto.com/ Congratulations! Passing emisions is always a relief.
