Heres the problem with my 96 sierra 5.7 liter ...it has 90k miles...wont start but i think i have it narrowed down to the tps....but in the manual it said there should be 5 volts of electricty that runs from the pcm to the tps....i tested it and its not there....don't know if im testing it wrong or should i go ahead and put a tps on it? and if i do have to change it do i have to change the whole throttle body as well? thanks Jim

First, if the TPS has to be changed, it's only the TPS...you don't have to change the throttle body.

What pointed you in the direction to test the TPS? What manual are you referring to? A dead TPS shouldn't prevent the engine from running, it just may not run smoothly. There are other sensor the ecm can use to figure out how to run the engine.

Do you have spark, fuel pressure?

I have a 96 yukon and I have the service manuals that the dealers use and it covers the whole line of 96 yukon/suburban/trucks. I can try to help. If the TPS gets its 5volts from the ecm then there could be problem with the ecm. I'll have to look it up.

thanks for the help...I have the haynes repair manual thats what im going off...but i was out there today and i noticed if i had the key on...not the engine, inside the truck was only reading like 10 volts so i cleaned it off tried it again ...truck will barely start, for 10 seconds or so and then die out and if i try to give it gas its really bad just hesitates real bad then dies....anyways i was getting a p0122 code thats why i started with the tps....

I hear the fuel pump start up (its only 6 months old) and when i took it it a while back they said it had plenty of fuel pressure 62 i believe so im stumped ...they thought it was the distributor wasnt it ....well about 200 dollars later i get the truck back still not running ....

I looked at the manual last night.

You mentioned that you were unable to get 5volts at the TPS. Terminal A of the TPS connector is the 5v ref from the ecm; Terminal B is sensor ground, and Terminal C is the TPS signal back to the ecm.

After reading the diagnostic chart if you are not getting 5v on Terminal A, then either there is a wiring problem between the TPS and the ecm or the ecm needs to be replaced.

Let me know what you find.

need help, my 1996 gmc sierra wont start, I replaced bad fuel pump and harness assembly, there is fuel going to the manifold, if I put gas in the carb it starts, but will not stay running.
