Compact Economy Car

What's a fun compact economy car for 4 Grand?
I am looking at 92-95 Civic Si HB, 96-98 Civic HB, Any Golf in This price range, or perhaps something from Hyundai/Kia.
30+ MPG (city/highway combined) is around what I'm looking for, but with also something with some zing to it. The Civic Si seems to be the leader, but I don't think the 92-95 had ABS on them. But If the brakes are good as is, I'd probably take it, just need something gets good MPG, that's also fun to drive.
Of all these, what's the funnest to drive, oh and please suggest anything else in this price range.

Does it have to be a hatch back! you could possibly go for something a bit bigger, civic's are good cars!
You want fun, in Honda you want Vtec and what about a Prelude or a Integra Coupe???
Unless you are really set on getting a hatch back then go the civic!
