Gears?

Can someone please explain. If your gears are higher, what happens? If your gears are lower what happens? thanks everybody.

I believe it's the higher the gears, the better the acceleration, and less streetability. 4.10's are good for dragging down the quarter mile, but are not suited for stop and go traffic. If you're looking for a good compromise between stock 3.23's and 4.10's, 3.73's are a good way to go. Depends on your car's use...

(note: I believe this is how it goes, I'm going on what I think I remember, if I'm wrong, chime in)

The 'gears' you're referring to are located in the rear differential.
If you lower the gear numerically, you increase the overall size of the gear. In example a 2.73 gear is smaller numerically then a 4.10, but bigger in physical SIZE.

The smaller the gear is NUMERICALLY, the higher your theoretical topspeed is but slower your acceleration is. It's just the opposite for a bigger numerically, gear.

Most LS1 6-speed owners chose 4.10 gears. I've been in a 6spd. LS1 eqpt. with them and around town it's perfectly fine. In fact, better then the stock 3.42's. On the highway, revs are kept very low with the 6th gear. From a stop, the car pulls like a MADMAN!

Most LS1 A4 owners swap to 3.73s or stick with the "optional" 3.23s that come factory. I've still got the 3.23's in my car, but I'm sure I'll throw a 3.73 out back when I get a new rearend. The stocker's on borrowed time. (knock on wood)

to add more....fuel economy = 3.23 big burn out = 4.56........you looking for economy or show, its up to you and only you........

reason for this simply.....your engine revs higher.....

ex. 2000RPM with 3.23 at 60MPH
3200RPM with 4.10 at 60MPH

using skidmarks thread, if you have a v6 3.8 manual whats the best way to go.
