Problems shifting out of Park Need help how to install or take in to shop? no brake lights have been stranded several times works shifts ok when it is cold outside. brake switch Now it's summer in texas and doesn't get cool enough at night. Is it something that you have to remove the steering column or what is the trick to replace it seems to have a clip and I'm think it might brake off when I'm trying to replace it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. thanks

What year vehicle do you have?

Based on your description, it sounds similar to my 96 yukon. The shift interlock is activated through the brake switch, so if the switch is bad, the interlock won't release and you won't be able to get it out of park.

As far as replacing the switch, it's a royal pain in the rear to do....I've been there once before and now I have to do it again because the switch is going bad again.

ASSUMING your vehicle is similar to mine.....

The clip is known as a C-Clip. My advice is to get a new so you don't have to worry if the old one breaks. I used a screwdriver to pop the clip off. Since I could barely fit my hand up behind the steering column to grab the brake switch, it was hard to disconnect the harness.
You can get C-clips from Lowes. I put the new switch in and somehow was able to push the new c-clip in place with my fingers.

Not sure how I did it but I did it!! A royal pain!!! I don't know if there is an easier way other than removing the entire dash board.
