This one will only have 4 posts.

Here's 1.

I'm using a much rougher pencil base this time. Normally I would transfer it one more time but I learned alot on the last one and it's kinda driving the direction on this one.

One significant time saving change is the fact that I used a red verithin and colored my highlight and shadow lines prior to the scan. This was the drawing will serve as a template for all layers.

I put my drawing on layer 1 and lock it and add 2 layers above it. One layer is for the lineart base and the other highlights and shadows.

p.s. I left that long line through the tire in on purpose. Anybody know how I'm gonna get that out so it doesn't interfere with the tire?

Looks great, and I learn so much when you post these "step-by-step" threads.

(Still haven't figured out Jeri C's tutorials, your posts just seem easier to follow.)

back at it

gonna finish the lineart and hilite Illy part tonight. Start rendering tomorrow.

Oh...I used the scissors (sp) tool to cut the wheel well line at the points where the rubber hits.

I actually rarely if ever used the scissors tool until I saw it in Jeri's Newbie tutorial. That's right...the newbie tutorial. I read lots on all of this stuff and I caught that gem in her newb tute and that tip alone is worth the cost for me. You can always learn more..even an old dog like me.

Hi Lemorris,

Ok I'm a lil confused. You are doing the line drawing in PS? I thought Jeri starts out w/ Ill for line drawings. I am going to have to get back to Jeri's tuts.

Anyway who cares about that:)
That ride is tight.

It is hard learning how to use PS for the channel technique. I guess like anything it takes practice.

I will go ahead and post my progress on the cobra.

Take care

thia lineart is in Illustrator. But you can do vector in PS too. I like Illustrator better for it though.

Interesting idea on making cuts, I usually just spend the time to add and adjust nodes on the body lines to fit the tire outline.

since I don't need it to be a "fillable" shape because i render in Photoshop, having closed paths doesn't matter. Allows you to draw it much faster.

When you import your file into Photoshop it rasterizes your lines and creates closed areas that you can use the magic wand to select and fill in.

That's my challenge, I still do all of the work (lines and color) as a vector, so I usually need closed paths.
Trying to gain PS skills.

Thanks for the kind words. It's still a learning experience for me. To answer Alex..."YES" to both programs. Lineart in Illustrator, rendering in Photoshop

Here's the latest:

I decided to go with the Beige base as the Black was giving me fits..lolol

oh well maybe Jeri will come to my rescue again.

Hi Lemorris,
The passat looks awesome.
What happen w/ the black?

That is one of the things I want to ask Jeri.
How does she decide what colors to pick for the car body. It would be cool if she listed some examples of channel colors for body color x.

Can you write a couple of steps on using the gradient tool for shading? (no need for screen shots or great detail) In Jeri's car tut she uses the brush. Right now that is all I know how to do. I am not sure if she showed the gradient tool in her newbie tut. I might have to read that one to see :)

Thx Lemorris.

whew...had a brutal week

finally back

I was having some issues with the front rim and the color in general. I really wanted to do black but finding a good base in the channels was eluding me because I'm a dork.

Anyway...I went back to Illustrator and re-did the front rim then I went to my channels and found a Grey that had enough of a tint to it that would support my black blends as well as adding a white channel at 50% so I can carve some hot spots and transition the black. Soon I'll be adding a color channel like blue and maybe a purple which I will use to blend down into the black and whites and set it off.

I'm much happier now...

decided to show what's gonna happen when I finish this up.

I select the black tones channel and adjust the contrast up. While rendering it's easier to see the lines and shapes but when I'm done I'll knock it up about +33 and then my black areas will meld. like so.

Man that looks very impressive :)
That vector drawing had to take some time.
I think ps for rendering the tones gives you much more freedom.
More like traditional painting.

I love the wheels.
And the lights are looking great.
I really like the audi that the passat is based on too.
Timeless design.

lol

customer wanted Maroon now.

The beauty of channels worked in my favor. I duplicated my black tones channel and then selected just the body fills then selected the inverse and deleted. I then changed my color from black to a maroon color and duplicated the channel and made an even darker maroon channel so I'd get a real rich tone. Then I changed the base body fill channel from grey like on the black car to a high bright pinkish color...this is where my hot spots ride and that's it. The entire change took 3 minutes.
