87 ranger start problem

:banghead: 87 Ranger 2.0 engine runs only when key is in start possition. Engine is carburated with breakerless distributor. Wireing diagram indicates that power to the coil comes either from a brown(w/pink) wire from ignition switch that goes to the coil and then to the starter side of start solenoid (That wire was disconnected so I hooked it up as indicated, the wire started smoking because, DUH, power just drains through the starter to ground which is pretty much a dead short and makes perfect sense when I look at the diagram which makes the diagram pretty much sensless and useless :screwy: . But even if that were right the coil still doesn't get power with the ingition switch in the run possition with the wire hooked up to the solenoid or not) or maybe the power is supplied through the dark grn w/yellow wire that comes from something called an Idle Speed Control and also goes to the Ignition Module? I'm pretty sure that's the pulsed wire as it's the only connection between the Ignition Module and the Coil.
Can anyone say definitively if the problem is in the ignition switch or whether that brown w/pink wire should indeed be hooked to the start solenoid?

OK so wire color from Ignition Switch to coil is red with a stripe in the book (looks solid red to me on the truck) & changes color somewhere between the coil and the start solenoid. If that helps any possible confusion.
