'94 overheating. water in exhaust. help

i need help.
my '94 amigo overheated yesterday. the rpm's were reving up and down.
and theres water in my exhuast. i put new water and coolant in- but after driving about 5 minutes the temperature was at the Hot red line.
any advice on what the problem could be?
