lol i got a 89 mr2 turbo jdm, OMG the wires behind that dang radio control everthing in the car i think, do not mess with thoes wires intell you get a diagram!!!!, i think there is an old post here with that info ( cause i asked before ) my car was messed up cause i friend of mine decided to try a really wierd ( ie i am in a hurry ) way of installing my new radio, tail lights stoped working, dash lights, power windows started fritzing out. but lemme look for that post and i will repost info here

Hi guys, I managed to find a wiring diagram in the end. Still not installed the new radio because the audio outputs from the old one go straight to an amplifier behind the passenger seat, the new radio only has speaker outputs, so I'm going to have to find the amp and rewire the speaker leads to the new radio.

not sure about a jdm 89 but I have a US market 88 and that speaker amp is under the drivers seat (left side) but possibly under the right side in your car... when I wired up my aftermarket deck it kept blowing the dash illumination/taillights fuse but it turns out the amp somehow shorted it, so I just disconnected the amp connector and removed the amp and everything was ok after that :)

89's were the second gen in japan
