Graduate to a motorcycle.

The delightful little sprite of a lady who lives 3 doors down recently bought a 50cc step through Honda scooter. Because its cute and small, she thinks its just great, and not intimidating. IMO they are so slow they are dangerous, even in the city.

How can I convince her that a real motorcycle, even a small one will be safer (will actually keep up with the flow of traffic) and more fun and useful than her "cute little scooter" (as she says)

It gets worse. Her husband (yuck!) likes her scooter so much he's getting one of his own.

(Hmmm.......maybe she should get a Sportster and leave the girlie scooter to him!!)

There is nothing really wrong with the scooters. I understand that you think they are dangerous, but have you ever looked up the statistics on them? As far as accidents are concerned, statistically they are much safer than motorcycles. When you take a closer look at it, as with motorcycles, safety is effected greatly by the skill and common practices of the rider. If she enjoys her scooter and she is safe on it, I say leave her and her scooter be.

You might be surprised... remember, her scooter is lighter than your bike. It won't run 9's in the QM, but it will move just fine. Honestly, I'd let her have her hayday! At least it's 2 wheels, not 4!!!!

It's probably limited to 30mph and illegal for use on highways and freeways. I would not say they aren't safe. They may not be as safe as a car, but compared to say a bicycle, at least it has lights, and a loud horn, which makes it pretty safe.
I have a 50cc moped, and it keeps up fine with nieghborhood traffic (where the speed limit ranges between 20 and 30mph - although everybody still passes you because of a constant need to needlessly be an asshole, endanger pedestrians, children, and everything else on the road).

I live in a suburban town outside of Boston, the speed limit varies between 30-45mph.. I get stuck behind mopeds/scooters doing 25-30 in a 40 every now and then.. when i get a chance I pass them.. I make sure there is no oncoming traffic and I pull out and make my pass giving them plenty of space.. I don't feel the need to sit behind them and do 15mph under the posted limit.. When I'm on my bike I just ride up beside them and give a nod and pass on by.
