problems with display??

I'm having a problem with the onboard display which shows the average fuel consumption, amount of fuel left etc.

Its been working fine, but now if i top up the petrol, the computer doesn't register it and tells me i have no fuel left and i get the annoying beep everytime i drive (the one you get when under 30 miles to warn you..). I've tried resetting the display, but the only way i can get it to work is to completely fill the tank each time. I don't want to do this - its often more convenient for me to put in £10 or so.

I've been back to the garage with it and they are insisting that this is not a problem, that it is how the car is designed, and that it will not work properly unless i allow the tank to drain down to almost empty and then refill it completely each time. I can't believe this is right - has anyone else had this problem?

At the moment i have just over 1/4 tank of petrol and the display is reading 0 miles!!

Help!
