Z-71 front diff lockup

my friend has a 03 Z-71, and when he comes out of 4HI and goes to 2HI he gets a grinding noise in the front and the steering is still tight like when he is in 4HI. any ideas?

It does take a few moments to disengage sometimes. I try to keep it straight for a few seconds after pulling out of 4HI. Also, shifts are easier under light throttle.
