Generally its an easy swap, especially if you have a small block Chevy.
Get the right bolt pattern for the bell housing. It seems the SBC pattern is much more common to find in 700 R4 trans than a BOP pattern.
If you have an Olds or Pontiac engine, you need a BOP pattern.
The 700 trans was ugraded in mid-1987, and the upgraded ones are prefererable. However, finding an upgraded one in a BOP pattern is difficult.
To swap one in you need to make a custom trans cross member, and likely shorten the drive shaft a bit.
If you get a 700 R4 from a carbureted vehicle, grab the stock throttle cables and brackets. The TV (throttle valve) cable is easier to install and adjust if you retain the stock brackets.
Adjusting the TV cable is critical for proper transmission operation.
