I have a 79 El Camino and had a problem seeing the instruments, ie., speedometer, clock, etc. Since GM in their wisdom decided to have the guages painted black. I found that removing the instrument cluster cover (Clear Plastic lens) then the cluster housing (Black cover over Guages) that the back side of the cover was a blueish-green. Typical GM crap. Since GM mounted the instrument cluster lights directly behind the instruments, they managed to block off most of the light that is supposed to illuminate the guages. I painted the back side of the Black cover housing with a bright white gloss paint. Now I don't even have to turn the headlight knob for intensity, as my guage lights are twice as bright as they used to be, and I now have no problem seeing the guages at night, and most importantly, I didn't spend any money on higher intensity bulbs that would have just made things a lot hotter.
