My NEW Black housing headlights (98 Civic) Lots of PICS!

I actually drove my car like this to the Home Depot (10 minutes away) to get some better paint than what I had:

I set the oven at 245 and left them in there one at a time for about 7 minutes.....

Dude...imo the reflection is there for a reason.....i don't think it was a good idea painting that black as well....unless you are running hids.

You're getting the lights confused. I am painting the parking lights / sidemarkers, not the chrome of the head light :p

Dude SWEET Pics!! Love the blackheadlights my friend! I havent seeen you on here in a while. Last I remember were the ground controls how are they? :D The CTR's arent that dark...they're kinda smoked...here's a pic of 99-00 one's but I have a pic of 96-98 one's I just gotta find em...

Yea they're just the blinkers. They're not gonna be as bright now but who cares, they look nice dude! My blinkers part is black :D

Those damn things looks sweet! Man, that was pretty smart by putting them in the oven. It took my ass forever w/ the freakin' hairdryer when I was doing my tail lights. They look good though!

Thanks for the props! I just went with flat black since the housings were black. I imagine smoked would also look nice. You probably could achieve the smoked look with just not as many coats as I used

They look more like 99-00 headlights now.

im planning to do the same to my OEM headlight, but i was wondering if baking the headlight is a good idea to pry it open? wouldnt the headlight housing melt or something?

Youre not leaving it in the oven for an hour... the other way is very long and painstaking... get a heat gun and start at one end - heat it up, stick in a screwdriver... and continue on down the line till you got like 20 screwdrivers in it and it comes out. after i have finish painting them, how do i put it back together? do i juss put it back in the oven to reheat the glue in? or do i use a glue gun to re glue it in?

When I took my projectors apart, I tried to get as much of the glue that was already on there OFF. it makes it alot easier! I used waterproof silicone sealant. Shit worked good as hell!! havent had a leak yet! And I did this about a month ago! :devil:

I would use a waterproof silicone -- and something that might take some heat abuse, like outdoorsy type crap... cause it can get a lil hot up in there :bloated: :finger:

i don't like it. i think the blinkers define the edge of the car more, IMO. good painting, but not my style. I just cleared out my reflectors today on my 96 civic after sticking em in the oven and replaced all 4 bulbs with hyper white bulbs. f*$&ing sweet.

Hey LX98Civic thanks for ur help dude!! I did the oven trick myself on my OE headlights! They came apart sooo easy! :coolguy: I painted em flat black too, lol I have em on right now!! :D my projectors are sitting on my couch :rolleyes: lol...I wanna take pics but no digicam :( lol

the oven actually slightly cracked by headlight lenses, and i only did em on 275 for 7 minutes each. i notified the writer of the article i used to do it. he put a disclaimer up now. it's barely noticable so i'm not tripping.

LXcivic98, did you use gloss black, or flat black? Or did you put on a gloss clear-coat? I have a black 98, and was thinking of painting them with the same color code as the car.

Man, I wish I would've done that trick when I had my black 97 civic and I was painting my tails. I spent hours w/ that damn hair dryer!

I used flat black. The can is on the first page if you did not see it. I know there are a lot of pics and maybe you didn't see it. I used flat black because the chrome was already flat black and I just had to paint the parking light....

I've done the lights twice with a hair dryer and once with the oven. I could of done 6 headlights using the oven trick when using the hair dryer those two times :o :bloated:

Hey, quick question. Did you have to sand it down at all? Or did you just paint it? How about the housing? Any sanding at all? I was just told I need to sand it down. Nice, planning on doing that once I get my car painted.....****DROOL****

No sanding just cleaned and painted. The chrome was already black so I just had to paint the reflective chrome of the parking lights. I may put these on ebay to get some angel eye head lights (when the price comes down). ..and yes, I will be pulling them apart to paint the chrome black :alien:

Sorry to bring this old post up, but I want to confirm another user of the method. The oven trick is freakin genius! Sooooooo much better than a hair dryer. The difference here is that I used gloss black instead of flat to match my car. I dont know if you used flat black for a reason but I think I know the gloss black's downfall. In certain light conditions the gloss shows up like a rainbow, which is a little anoying, but It's not that bad. It looks really nice matching the paint of the car too. I got them back in the car now and theyre gonna sit overnight. I know theres always been a little condesation in my lights, will this damage the paint? I also noticed that the paint can says not to use in things that exceed 200 F , do the lights get that hot?

Mine have yet to melt or anything happen to the paint. But, I only had to paint the chrome of the parking light and I just put Polargs super whites in the corners last week. As for the head lights I am on stock since the Hyper whites are played out here and I just don't need anything happening because of 90 watt bulbs.....

I can't give you any numbers but I cna give you an idea:

With my stock bulbs after running for a few minutes I can put my hand on the lens and it's pretty warm. With my aftermarket 80 watt bulbs it will burn your a$$ after about 2-3 seconds. Just an idea of the differences.
