hello there, new firebird owner here....i just bought a 1996 trans am, LT1 motor, auto, T-tops, LOVE IT!!!! Bone stock with the exception of aftermarket exhaust system, has a great sound!!!

Anyway, the low coolant light is on, I have checked the overflow tank with the dipstick and it shows to actually be over the full limit, would this make the light come on? also the check engine light is on as well....im wondering the aftermarket exhaust has triggered this. is there anyway to check codes on the this car, and if so, where can I get a list of codes and explanations? is there any problems that stick out with this year model of car? thanks in advance people!!!!

Im sure theres a way to reset it, by either unplugging a certain fuse or something like that. You can probably call a Pontiac dealership and ask em how, its usually very simple. Then if it comes BACK on, youll know theres a problem somewhere. You can either buy a scanner or Autozone will test it Im sure.

There is a sensor in the overflow tank that is notorious for sticking. What I found that worked was to make sure the tank is filled to where its supposed to be and then tap on it with a wrench, just don't hit it too hard as it will break. After several taps the light should go out.

Check engine could be out due to a bad O2 sensor. Tends to happen when you upgrade the exhaust without putting in new 02 sensors. I'd check those out first.

Yes, a "low coolant light" sensor. I had to replace it on my '95 T/A It's a 50$ part at your local dealer. It has one wire plug and a spring clip to hold it in place. It's a 5-10 minute change and will solve your problem. Spend the $$ and never worry about it again.
