Mystery wiring connection

Another problem on my '97. What is the wiring connection under the rear for? (left side, just past bumper, above the exhaust) Noticed today that it was hanging loose and reconnected it, but would like to know if this being disconnected would have anything to do with check engine light/egr codes. Is there a connection in the trunk that would do this as well? Very important. Please help!

What are the codes you were/are getting?
Look at a wiring diagram for your car and see what these wires go to.

those wires might go to an o2 sensor (although why they'd put one way back there is beyond me), as a bad o2 would cause a check engine light, although KimMG is right, pick the codes out of the computer and see what they're for, that will give you a good place to start.

You wouldn't have noticed if the marker on that side was out by chance. I think the only connector in that area would be your park light marker on the side of the vehicle.

Denisb- Didn't think to look for lights out. Just reconnected & stressed. Will disconnect tomorrow and double check that. Thanks!

Having taken that bumper off before, I can tell you that the only connector in that area is for the lights above the license plate.
