General Knowledge

Hey, I would love to be able to be more knowledgeable and be able to work on my car, but I got no friends with garages or anything like that. The shops wont take a know-nothing, and I dont have the money to go to a school. Where did all of you come to know all that you know. Everyone in here cant be a liscened (Sp) mechanic, or can you?

See if any dealers or service shops will offer you an apprenticeship, some places still do that. Not only will you learn to work on cars but you'll also get paid at the same time. And as you're going through an apprenticeship and make money try taking some auto classes at a local college, they'll train you in some more technical aspects as well. Good luck man. :smile:

When I couldn't find the answer to what i wanted to know I went to DSMtuner and searched their, then DSMtalk. If I couldn't find the answer their the problem wasn't it hadn't been asked, it was how i was asking about the problem.

Between those 3 places, and the sticky at the top of the main forum you should beable to find everthing you ever wanted to know. And then some! As for wrenching on the car. Its learned by just getting your feet wet, start small, and pray nothing breakes. :icon16:

<Edit: P.S. A Ebay DSM cd-rom shop manual may not be a bad idea for you to get. they come in handy.

I learn mainly from just going out there and doing it. Yea its good to sit here and read through the forums but unless you actually go out there and do it, your not going to learn as much.

I learned how to work on cars by having a lack of money. I bought a Haynes repair manaul and started fixing problems. Less than a year later i was doing the timing belt on my talon.

Read and do. I spend LOTS of time on the internet reading forums, tech articles and my Haynes manual. Then its time to go and actually do it. I had auto class at school, but most of the learning I did in there was reading ahead in the text book and monkeying around other peoples cars. Reading is very important, but experience in invaluable.

you can start by buying some tools. get one of those 100pc automotive kits for 30 bucks. then find some shit to tighten...

i had an engine fire a while ago and had to tear out the entire pas side of the engine bay on the side of the freeway. then i had to put it back in for the tow. yu should always have some tools in the trunk or in te floorboards of the back seat, you never know when they will be needed...
