Replace the whole piece. That way you fix the rust as well. I'm glad to see that Bondo wasn't one of your options :D

that's the thing. I"m actually a girl and i'm helping my bf with his car. I took auto body for two years and attented Wyotech for 6 months and got really sick so i had to come home. This car is more for go then show. but he wants to try and open a shop with his dad and me and some other people...and he has to prove to his father that we can all do our share so he's not stuck doing it himself. Anyway....I took the courses and know in my heart that I don't like to cut anything short when it comes to work that I do. Just money is tight and he needs help making decisions about how the car should look and what goes on and if it is worth it. This is a dream to him and we really want to open a custom shop together. Anyway....if you guys would like to see the progress...i'll keep posting pics of out little red beast....and by the way....we already painted the interior a flat black...I'll post those pics too....he doesn't understand why it painted it yellow in the first place ;)

Well if you're thinking about opening a custom shop, then you should automatically know that you can't just take the easy way out. You can't just grind down the rust and bondo the whole thing, like your average backyard mechanic would do. Cut her up and weld the new piece in, that's the only right way to do it. My friend had his car painted and all the rust "taken care of" this spring. All the kid (strangely he graduated from Wyotech in Pa last year) did was grind out the rust, bondo, and then paint over it. Now the rust has popped out of his rear quarter panel a month ago, so his "solution" lasted like 3 months. So your bf should do it the right way, or wait 'til he has the time and $ to do it right.

I am "your average backyard mechanic"... :loser:

But honestly, the rust never really got worse cuz I live in the south so I don't care really if it comes back or not, except the bondo didn't harden all the way in one spot (no rust, previously bondoed before ownership, hit by a neon and fucked it up) so I'm going to rent a belt sander because my friend is never available to let me work on my car and I'm going to shave the bondo off the roof and leave just enough to cover the rivets and seal the edges, sand smooth the rear quarters, maybe sand out some of the rust in my door jamb and primer/paint... all in my backyard this weekend. But guess what... I don't really care because I have over 200,000 miles on the chassis, over 100,000 miles on the engine and it runs like a mofo and still gets 30+ mpg...

*end rant from turtlecrxsi aka. backyard mechanic and partial primer crew member #666

Yeah but you're also not doing it for a shop, or to prove that you can do it for a shop. That was the point I was trying to make by the "backyard mechanic" comment.

Well, we are doing the same....working out of our two stall garage that is attached to the house. LOL the house smells like paint when we painted the hood.. Umm....well a few things will have to be cut short because he made the decisions...but that rocker will def get the cut and fix method to it. I just gotta off the phone with him and he's says I give out too much info..lol. But yes, having a shop we would never cut corners because then we would have the money to do what we needed to do to get the job done. As of right now...we don't. SOOOOOOO...in conclusion...I totally agree with you guys about cutting it out and replacing it. The kid from wyotech...what was his name? But man I hated that place...out of a pop of 1500 students..there was like 10 girls..and I was one of them....scary..!!!!!! :thumbsdow
