Hey, I have a 97 Grand Prix GTP w/ about 78g miles on her that is just giving me all sorts of problems.
About a year ago it began not starting up right away (last summer). I would drive it fine, cut it off, come back to it in a few hours, and it wouldn't start. However, If I waited 20 min. or so it would start up eventually. When it wouldn't start it would just turn over and sound like I was out of gas.
So I took it to the dealership, who kept it for over a week, returned it to me saying it didn;'t happen for them so they didn't know what to do.
SO i kept driving it and over the winter I had no problems.
This summer, it has began cutting off on me while driving, and it won't restart right away, it will restart in about 20 min. (same turning over as if there is no gas.) Also, sometimes the RPM gauge cuts off or just doesn't start up when I start the car up. It only seems to have problems when it is really hot outside, but the temp gauge is normal.
So it has been in the shop 3 times this summer, first time they claimed it was my catalytic converter.... yeah right?
Second time, they said they just couldn't figure it out and gave it back to me.
3rd time I took it to a local small name place who claimed to have dealt with this thing before and he chaged a module for me.
Well since then I have not had any problems (but that was yesterday), while driving today, my RPM gauge cut off and my car made a noise like it was going to cut off as well.
I checked a lot of forums and a lot of them said it was the fuel pump, but the people I take it to won't change it even though I asked them to because if they change it and it doesn't fix it, my warrany won't cover it.
So should I just pay for them to put in the fuel pump, or is there a way to convince the dealer that it is the problem.
PS - my warrantly runs up in about 10g miles, I think the dealer is just BS'ing me until that runs up...
thanks for any help you guys can give me

To verify a defective fuel pump put a pressure tester on at the Schrader valve on the fuel injector rail and regulator. If it reads 45 - 55 psi at idle and over a period of time your fuel pump is probably OK.
Its sounds more like a crankshaft position sensor problem to me. Has that been changed out yet?
