Transmission problems

In the last few weeks I have noticed that it is very rough changing gears in my 2001 VW GTI 1.8T (standard). In a similair time frame I found that it felt as though the gear was slipping when I was going uphill in a low gear with low RPMs. I took my car in, they said it was the transmission (at least for the rough changing), they adjusted the linkage and that did nothing, they say it is internal.
What is the chance I would go through a transmission at 72,000KM?
Thanks.
Cheers,
CJ

If you do alot of "agressive shifting" its pretty easy.
Clutch could likely be the problem.
What gears are hard to shift into?

How would you define "aggressive shifting" it shudders when shifting into reverse and is rough going into other gears. Took it in, looks like the clutch needs to be replaced, and that it might have damaged the reverse gear at some point.
When a clutch needs to be replaced and it is not the friction plate is not badly worn that is the problem, does that indicate that the problem is a manufactures defect, or misuse of the clutch?
Thanks.

oh, u didnt say anything about reverse. If it makes noise going into reverse its time for a new transmission.
Clutch pressure plates dont normally wear (other than normal wear) unless heavily abused. Flywheels also the same way. ALthough vw flywheels on new body style are dual friction and when abused they actually seperate and then you need a new flywheel.

Well another tranny question then.. 2002 Jetta 1.8T.
(SOMETIMES) when shifting fast it grinds.. yes clutch is all the way in. (sometimes..mornings) Reverse will not go into gear i have to pump the clutch a few times to get it in. Could it just need to be adjusted??
