Whats up out there!!! its been awhile but i'm back....i hope all your cars are on the up and up....
Anyway i got a big question...
My boss who owns a Chevy Impala 2001 V6 supercharger wants to race me on my Olds Aurora 4.0 2001....Um, who would win...
She (thats right, she) want to race on a drag strip, you know 12.0 second strip, side by side for time.
I mentioned to her that i have a baby northstar under the hood, cause i was kind of intimidated by supercharger, but then she got quiet then said "i got a supercharger"....
So fellas, ladies....Who would win?

my bet will be on you. that's partly because i like auroras so much. i do however also like impalas. The Impala SS is a nice car. it's 3.8L OHV V6 produces 200hp stock. this is a factory supercharger that adds maybe 30-40 hp, 40 being on a cold day with low humiditiy. just looking at horses, you've got more with a totally stock setup and naturally aspirated.
facts:
- at 3600 pounds the impala's got you beaten by 200lbs.
- it's go a 125mph governor, you're 130 i belive
- quartermile / 0-60 times are supposedly identical
*edit* the quartermile times are identical without the supercharger :(

a good driver using gears 1 and 2 could pull it off. deflate your front tires before hand, 25psi should be ok. turn the AC off, fan at low. no heat or anything. make sure your gas is almost empty. a third of a tank should be good. turn T/C off, try not to spin the wheels too much. if you can shift yourself, put a hundred dollars on your car.can't shift yourself, tell her it's just a friendly race.
women are not to be underestimated on the track. the closest i've gone up against with my 1998 autobahn is a monte carlo. it had no chance and quickly gave up.
good luck, please post the results and why you did/didn't win.
*edit was correcting for the fact that you have a 2nd gen, i thought it was first.

hmm - close call with those SCs.
Personally, I would increase the psi in the tire to lessen resistance; being careful NOT to spin the tires though. my Rora is noticably sluggish with low psi.
Install K&N filter and do the air box bod if you have not already done so. This may add 10+ hp.
traction off, I let my tranny do the work; put it in 1st and leave it there. It will upshift into 2nd with a "chirp" on it's own when it's ready and then 3rd gear without any help from the driver. Don't just dump the throttle at the line because the torque limiter will cut your power.
I think she may get you off the line but when the 4.0 comes alive after 30 mph she may be very surprized.

no way tjm! :)
it'll chrip going into 2nd? wow. i have got to try that. next time i'm out i'll leave it in first and see what happens. does the 2nd gen have the power button too? it gives an extra 200rpm before shifting.

... but ya won't get the chirp with low psi in the tires.
The PCM protects the engine and tranny by upshifting at about just under 6000 rpm (power button in) if ya just leave it in 1st. And it gives you full line pressure in the tranny so the shift is so tight that it'll chirp 2nd. Good motor mounts are a must for the tight shift.
dunno about the power button on the 2nd gen but i think it has it too

i tried 1st gear with a cold air intake. it didn't chirp due to my tires being low (softer ride) but it made a neat sound when it shifted. it was somewhat like when a turbo shifts. just a soft but noticable "pssft" sound on the 1-2 shift and on the 2-3 shift. very cool. i've never heard that before.
oh yeah, if you've never done this before: it's just like a manual when you let off the gas, be ready for a harsh deceleration since we have no clutch and shifting to neutral is not as easy. putting it into drive should be fine though.
