Fan Switch

I have a 99 Alero. The first two settings (low and medium) on my heat/AC fan doesn't work. If you turn the knob to the 3rd setting it's blowing on high. From what I heard this is a common problem. Is it the switch that needs replaced? Thanks for any help!!

Sounds more like a blower motor resistor problem than the switch on the HVAC control. The resistor feeds voltages to the blower motor based on the setting of the fan speed switch.

Its located under the dashboard in the evaporator/blower assembly.

If it is a blower motor resistor problem do you know if it's expensive? Is it something that I can get a "novice" mechanic (family) do or do I need to take it to a dealer? Thanks for helping me out.

The blower motor resistor is GM part number 89018413 and lists for $26.04.

You could do the work do-it-yourself (DIY). Its located on the passenger side under the dash. Remove the kickpanel. You'll see a silver or black circular object which is the blower motor itself. To the back of it towards the firewall is the blower motor resistor. It has an electrical connector and two small bolts/screws holding it in place.
