How many of you guys own a CBR here?

I'm guessing majority of the active members here do.

So what you like about it or what compelled you to buy it?

I own a 93 CBR 600 (first bike). The first time I rode a bike (83 750 Nighthawk) was probably the most influencial moment that drove my ambitions into buying my own. As far as what I like about my CBR.....just about everything  . Its mechanically sound with just a tad over 19k mi. There is no hesitation @ any rpm. The transmission shifts incredibly smooth, and the clutch is effortless. It was definatley worth the buy.

Did he ASK about your stupid Viffer? NO!

That's what I thought. Besides, it wasn't til after your Trichump that you wised up and bought a real bike.

Reason I ask because I picked up one last Tuesday, 99 F4. It's an awesome bike, smoother than SV at times, tranny is slick. Acceleration is never intimidating. Brakes are little better than SV, but potentionally would be a lot better if I do some casual maintenance and get a good feel. First time I rode it, my body got sore after 30 mins, but I acclimated just fine next day. Though I think the bars are a bit wider and further than today's bike. For some reason, I think lower clip-ons would be better as far as ergonomic goes. Pegs are low and ok, but I'm sure they'd start grinding sooner than the SV. Low range power is extremely good for inline.

Basically, it's everything you want starting out on an intermediate bike or 600 cc class without getting killed. But I think its acceleration is it downfall, the keyword is rev. Starting off, I had been feathering the throttle pretty much as I would on the SV, because there's so much grunt available on the SV. With the CBR, it needs gobs of throttle to get moving, but this becomes kinda unmanageable in traffic. Because right after you manage to move on past 8K, powerband appears, and that's not much fun when there are cars on front. So basically, I have to adjust my riding style, it's super smooth, it could be even labelled as "too forgiving." Steering feels heavier than SV, but more planted, good stability even with bald front tire and leaking rear tire.

It could definitely use some midrange. I also noticed quite a bit of fork dive during hard braking, not unfamiliar for SV. And brakes fading, but that could be particular to this bike because of maintenance issues. Handling and off/off throttle transition and getting on/off the corner is extremely fun, can't stop grinning sometimes, while SV is fun in a different way. But CBR really isn't a good bike for zooming through traffic, without holding 2nd gear at higher rpms, and that could get loud and abnoxious. This is all relative to SV where there's always an instant thrust available, CBR requires more attention to which gear/rpm.

Seat is very plush and comfy but on hot days temperature exceeding 100 F, which is everyday here, the heat from exhaust could easily keep your ass warm, especially at redlights. Would hate being on pillon seat.

Other than that, everything about this bike is great, just needs more juice for straightaways. The intake roar this bike makes... :jump3:, and when cruising, the engine resonates wails like jetfighter.

i love my bike.. has been geared down a little (1 down and 2 up i think) and its perfect.. couldnt ask for too much more... maybe a little better highway gas milage.. im sitting at about 7500 rpm at 75mph... so... if i do 80-85 (my usual over in my car) im at 8k - 8.5k... not the best gas mileage... but i still get like 160miles per tank.. so 40mpg isnt bad... better than my jetta :)

congrats on a new bike Z.

i read your post on cons and minimal pros of the cbr and was amazed
now seriously, do you expect every bike to be perfect for you?

thinking back to when i first test rode a CBR600 in 97, it felt dull. comfortable and plush but very dull. doesn't mean its a bad bike, just not for me. hence i bought the gixer 750.

you are comparing apples with oranges in the cbr and sv comparo.

99 model with 02. three years is alot in bike development.

sports tourer with a ...... what category is an SV? tourer?

twin versus a four. henced the difference in power output. personally i'd like to be able to have more power high up so if i need it its there and not be on it the whole time. as for holding second, i'm sure in differing circumstances the sv would be reving high where the cbr would be comfortable

maybe you should have gone for a 750 or a 900 to get the real thrill.

hondas have the reputation of making a bike that goes fast without feeling fast. makes anyone a "good rider" with its forgiving nature.
maybe its better than it feels. i know the 954 is shitloads faster than the old gixer but it doesn't give the feel of the speed

now Jeep. please tell me in detail about the Viffer. i'm asking all about it. :iceslolan

thanks. but come now Aussie, don't put me in your knickers.. I still have a pair. :flipa:

read it again, pros are quaility, and cons are quantity, hehe. greatest compliment I can give to any bike is that I've ridden it with completely bald front and leaking-air rear tire, and this bike still let me go faster through turns and accelerate harder than the SV. no drama.

and the SV I have was designed in 99. I know it's kinda like comparing apple and orange, but I can only draw from my experience so far. and enough with SV bashing... it is a real sportbike, like Kawasaki Z1000. I bet it flicks faster than that Fairyblade. :loser:

never said a bike has to be perfect, in fact I said CBR is great. you're just trying to convince yourself that fairyblade is still fast :twak:. now I know why claim yourself to be a "good rider." it's the bike. :D

anyway, with all jokes aside, I'm going to be keeping the CBR for a while, already started personalizing.

it is deceptively fast, great confidence builder and more capable than I can push it on public road.

I'm also not the type to bite more than I can chew... because in the end of the day, all inlines are missile-fast, so I didn't wana jump right off to 750/liter (Aussie). but dang, to get any "adrenaline rush" acceleration... it forces me to break all speed limit every time. then again, I never began riding just so I can cruise the country side on a twin.

from a comfort standpoint, it's physically and mentally painful to go below 60 mph on it.

only problem I have is when the speed drops below 20 mph, the front brake fades and bites, repetitively, never smooth. this wasn't a problem when I applied the rear or use the front at higher speeds. could it be forks? brake fluids? front tire? brake pads.... errr...??

I had the same issue when I got my 600CBR. After driving it a while it began to smooth out, and it doesn't happen at all anymore. I would put my money on it being the brake pads as it was mine. Quick question: Does it grab more during turns? If so, it really sounds like its just the pads that havent been worn right for a while. How often has it been driving before you've taken it?

on speeds above 20 mph (when it's countersteering time), brakes are fine, I never had problem with making hard stop in traffic right before yellows turns red. and occasionally I tried the front with moderate lean, never gave me any trouble keeping the bike leaned or standing it up. no chirps or excessive fork dives. but I'll say this, not sure if it's the nature of the bike, but when the bike is straight, the moment I touch the lever for minimal braking, weight transfers real fast, so I wondered if the forks are compressing too much or not. never had fading though. the only problem is at low speeds. the calipers are Nissins, I'm not sure if Honda fitted them or if it was aftermarket. the low speed fading happens every time I brake for a stop. the bike has over 7300 miles now, it had 7150 when I got it.

I seriously do hope it's because of the tire or brake fluid or brake pads, if it's oil weight or springs or valves or rebuilding the forks, I'm looking at lot of money for mechanic labor. I'm just waiting now on some fund for tire, etc.

so I switched back to riding SV in the mean time. but I have another question, I fitted the rear wheel myself and it rides just fine. but today when I went to park it inside the garage, there was some metallic squeaking and screeching noise coming out of the rear/rear wheel. wondering what could cause this, chains wouldn't make this sort of noise. it sounds like scratching a plastic wrapping or inflated baloon with nails.

how adjustable are your shocks? or are they like typical honda and seized screws from day of delivery?

haven't messed with the setup yet, but as I've read on mags, I've experienced good amount of dives from the front end under moderate 1-finger braking. I think the rear is adjustable as well, and to be honest, rear is very smooth, it's the front that I don't get a good feel.
