why does the 4th gen cover all lt1 and ls1 years when they have diff body styles and diff engines?

Exact same chassis. Minor body changes.

What he said ^. It's the same body style. Just an upgraded front end to help stay in competition with the Mustang.

I'm suprised you didn't ask this about the '69 firebird/ camaro. they did more changes from '68 to '69 than any other facelift within a generation. (not counting generation changes)

I think the doors, roof and trunk are the only common body pieces. the hood, fenders, quarters are all different. interior, too.

the facelift for 1998 was the front clip, the taillights and a few interior pieces (for pontiac things like the IP, the center console, etc..) but the parts are interchangable amongst the 4th gen cars.

mechanically, they changed the engine, trans bellhousing and possibly the trans. the driveshaft and brakes... but this will bolt into any 4th gen car. (wiring is a different story)

All the cars have gone through facelift changes, this is to keep sales up by updating. "planned obsolescense" as they say. By continually updating the styling, they can convince the general public that the newest model is the one to have, not last years model. this is why older cars went through so many major changes each year. then they realized it cost a lot of $$ and cut the changes down.
