Tell your parents they're crazy the transmission you're putting into the car is probably worth double that.

lifter tick is not a reason to sell it for 300. as long as its actually lifter tick and not a bigger problem. did you try the lifter cleaning thing on vfaq.com? i havent tried it but apparntly it's worked for some people. make sure to change your oil after your done doing it.
you should also check your oil and always use a good oil filter :cough not fram cough cough.

Just out of curiousity what is wrong with fram because thats all I seem to have used but if there is something wrong with them then I might reconsider?

lots of little things. crappy filter element, cardboard end caps, plastic anti drainback valve
some people have also claimed slightly lower oil pressure with fram then other filters. this supposedly make lifter tick worse
so there really isnt any one reason but i try and avoid them

there is a thread that has a link on it that shows where someone did tests on a bunch of oil filters and fram was the worst, I will try to find it real quick

Uh oh....guess it was time for an oil change anyways. So which ones are good anyways? according to that link AC Delco is what I might look at getting tomorrow. And oh yea, I got lifter tick too, but it goes away after the engine warms up.

If you are plannig on cleaning the lifters i would say just replace them. The cleaning is not a definite way to get rid of tick, plus the new lifter have a 3mm hole instead of 1mm. (they are for 99+ eclipse)Also i believ there is a TSB for the new lifters.

im not sure i left for a bit and came back around 10 and the car was still here. so it looks like they might of listened. im not plannin on cleanin the lifters or anything, its my sisters car ill let her deal with it. i was just trying to get the point across to my parents that most 1st gens suffer from a lifter tick.
