Vauxhall Astra MK3 1998 Vibration noise from gear stick assembly

Hi all,

In my MK3 1998 TD Vauxhall Astra, there is a vibration noise that comes from the gear stick assembly when travelling:

I noticed that it looks like some rubber has perished. See pics:

Has anyone else experienced this problem, and do you know how to fix it? Does the whole gear stick assembly have to be fixed?
