Crankshaft or Bearing noise?

1990 cherokee - I've developed a clicking noise coming from right where the engine and tranny come together (at the rear main oil seal). I wiped the area a little and there seems to be grease and some unknown fiber material. It seems to happen when the car is fully warm. Does anybody have any advice. Thanks in advance.

If it is automatic, it could be the torque bolts are loose. Do you hear it just when moving or do you hear it even at a idle. dale

yeah, it is an automatic. and it happens in park as well as while travelling. I did notice that the two bolts in the very back of the oil pan were slightly loose, so I tightened them. It seemed to help a little, but there is still the noise.

I agree with dale.
These are the bolts that hold the torque converter to the flexplate. You cannot see them unless you remove the access cover, at the front of the transmission, right behind the oil pan.

I'm glad to hear that. I have the same problem with a 92 Cherokee 4.0 litre w/ 150k. Returned from a long vacation trip and now have a rattling sound coming from the rear bearing/torque converter area at idle. It goes away once engine speed is up. Rear seal leaks quite a bit (as they all do I hear so i was worried about rear bearing, or worse). I'll crawl under there tomorrow and give your suggestion a try.
