NCAA ruling on mascots

I think that it is totaly bullshit that the NCAA won't let schools' with a Native American mascot have any representation of their mascot games, along with the nicknames on uniforms. Obviously the school chose that mascot in a way to honor it. the best case in the Florida State University Seminole. Not only were the Seminole tribe a very prominent tribe in Florida, but they also support the mascot for FSU. The Seminole Indian Tribe of Florida helped desing the colors, costume and mascot for FSU.

I don't agree with it either. FSU did an exceptional job by involving the Seminoles in the creative process. Other schools haven't, which may be the problem in that they're being disrespectful in some manner. :shrugs:

good point. considerin that the NCAA only found 18 schools to have these "hostile" mascots, you would think they could do a case by case evaluation or analysis on each one to see which ones really are protraying them poorly. but then again, i'm sure they have better things to waste money on.

You can thank the pussy-ass, politically correct, hippies for this shit. I think it's F--KING stupid! Especially since im an avid FSU fan. What's next they can no longer use the song 'Seminole Wind' too? :disappoin

Once again, non Indians are telling Indians whats good for them. http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/sport/archives/2005/08/07/2003266864

yeah, i think this shit is pretty stupid. its affected my school (hendrix college, dont worry, noone else has heard of it either) and while we're still allowed to call ourselves the "warriors" we had to change our mascot from an obvious indian, to a "culturally ambiguous" shield.
now, i wouldnt say its "non indians" telling indians whats good for them. my highschool was also the warriors, and it was a large coilition of local indians and their families that led the charge against our mascot. we told them they were being stupid, and they got put down eventually.
especially considering the team was then ranked at the top of the state. surely the best 5A highschool team in texas couldnt be doing that bad for the image...
and correct me if im wrong, but arent the seminoles also one of the best college teams in the nation? id be proud to have my culture attached to that. all i get is the damn fighting irish, and they havent done shit lately, and you dont see irish americans getting all up in a tizzy about it...

Here's something interesting though. NSU (the school Carrie Underwood came from) is in Tahlequah, Oklahoma which is the headquarters for the Cherokee Indian Nation. The Cherokees now have the largest Indian tribe. Anyway, NSU's mascot is "The Indians" and guess what, they don't have to change.
The thing is I'm almost 1/2 Indian (I don't look it though) and my great grandpa was a full blood. My dad is a little over 1/2 (he doesn't look it either). Anyway, is any of my family upset? No. Do they really care? No.

Not that this deals with college, but back in the early to mid 90's after i left my elementary school they changed the name. We had been (when i attended) the Post Pirates, then somehow that name was deemed TOO violent so the name was changed to Patriots, then that too was changed and i believe my former elementary school is now the Penguins. I couldn't believe it back then and still can't believe it. The Pirate is a CHARACTER for crying out loud. Hell he even wore a smile. This world really turning upside down.

I think "Penguins" is an abusive term, is used without permission, and denigrates the individuals to which it refers. We need to have some sort of check on elementary school names before they get out of hand and really hurt someone!!!!

"Colleges and universities may adopt any mascot that they wish, as that is an institutional matter," said Walter Harrison, chair of the Executive Committee and president at the University of Hartford. "But as a national association, we believe that mascots, nicknames or images deemed hostile or abusive in terms of race, ethnicity or national origin should not be visible at the championship events that we control."
And there you have it. "events that we control" Those in control get to make the rules. If you don't like it, take your ball and go home. Just how does a Native American depicted from centuries back relate to something as trivial as kids playing games with balls anyway?
I guess if we can destroy their way of life, steal their land and renege on treaties, then we can use their likeness how ever we see fit.
OK, I'm ready for my beating.

while i sympathize with you here, i find that there are indeed organizations (like the seminoles) for example that were very responsable in the way they went about using the native americans likeness.
but anyways...if, like you said, its just a trivial ball game then why are people so up in arms about it? its just a ball game guys, noone saying anything bad about native americans, or abusing their image. a mascot a revered place of honor, not a dregradation, and should be seen as such.

a school should have a mascot like the 69'ers or something like that. and have a couple fornicating for their mascot. i wonder which would get more attention from the NCAA. :shrugs:

People who are "different" can be majorly stupid. Blacks complain when they get arrested that it's racism, or the fact that they live in the ghetto is not due to them having low-income jobs, its all the whie government :screwy: This is just an example, but the same goes with any minority group, nationality, etc. I'm legally handicapped due to a loss of my left hand, though I don't consider myself, and I don't sit around collecting taxpayer checks and sympathy or special treatment because I'm "different". America needs to quit getting so easily offended that we can't even use Indian names on sports teams.

Some good news here:The Palm Beach Post reported Saturday that Florida lawmakers are discussing legislation that would protect state university mascots against the recent NCAA decision to ban American Indian nicknames, logos and mascots during postseason play.
