Here a year or two ago I experienced the annoying check engine light and when I had the code read at the local shop they told me it had to do with the EGR flow malfunction. They were quick to look it up on the computer and give me a pretty high price for a new EGR valve but I chose to try cleaning it out myself first.

I bought some carb cleaner and took of the valve and amazingly enough it was damn near spotless. I didn't see how this could be the problem if there wasnt enough buildup that I could notice that would be causing a problem.

I then went to a car shop that my family is friends with and had a mechanic give me the best advice I have ever heard on this problem. It is not your egr valve it is the computer malfunctioning. I lookd into it and have seen hundreds if not thousands of upset millenia owners who have submitted posts all over about problems with the egr valve. Then they replace it for several hundred and it still givs the same error.

I found a junk yard type place here in Indiana called brickyard autoparts or something of that nature that dealed mainly in used mazda parts. For two hundred or so dollars I had a new computer shipped to my house. After installing the computer the code was gone obviously from taking off the negative battery post temporarily but it never came back. As I stated above I had this problem and fixed it about two years ago and have yet to have any problems iwth it. Plus the used comptuer was half the price the dealership was going to charge me for a new EGR valve that woudlnt ahve fixed the problem.

For anyone that wnats to replace hte computer here is a quick run through of what it takes.

First you must remove the cd player unit from the dash as well as hte trim peice that goes around it and around the shifter. I recomend being carefule here as I had trouble pulling my trim peice out and ended up breaking a clip that held it in place. From here all you need to do is pull the carpet back on each side of the center console near where you place your feet.

I belive hte passenger side gives you the best access. You should be able to see the computer unit (little silver box) throughteh whole in teh dash and need to remove hte screws holding itin place from this opening as well as from the area where you pulled back the carpet as there are more screws hidden in the back of hte unit. For hte most part you are now done as the only difficult part is plugging the new computer into the harnesses as you hav eno light, there is absolutely no room, and worst of all the harness cables have absolutely no play to them so you cant jsut pull htem out a bit to plug them in.

One thing I do want to mention though is you need the numbers on the computer so that you can order a comptuer that will work as some comptuers are made for the models with electric seats and all of hte otehr accesories and some are not. You should be able to remove the cd player and shine a flash light inside the hole and be able to get this number without taking out the ocmptuer.

I hope this solves alot of peoples problems as I know its a pain to go to the dealership and be lied to when they should knwo what the problems are with there cars. And then be over charged for a new EGR valve that isnt htat hard to change out in the first place.

I would think so as they have the same engine. I also tried reseting the computer multiple times and got nothing out of it. You may want to also remove your EGR valve and spray some carburertor cleaner inside and make sure its not clogged or actually bad. When I checked mine it was clean as could be so I knew something wasnt right.

I don't know if I mentioned it in my post but I finally found a used computer from a place called Brickyard Automotive or something like that in Indianapolis. They were pretty reasonable and once I gave htem my number from the top of hte computer they sent me the computer in a couple days and only charged 250-300 dollars. Though I dindt want to spend that much it was alot better htan ordering a brand new one from the dealership that they said would have to be ordered from over in Japan and would cost a minimum of 1,300 dollars and depending on the model computer up to 1,500. Hope this helps.

Where are you in Raleigh? I have the same problem and had the EGR valve replaced. The same day I picked up my car from the repair shop, the check engine light came on again.
