87 GT worth $4000?

Someone my brother works with is looking to sell his 87 GT. It's in good condition inside and out, and has 91,000 miles. I love Fieros and I've only found one other Fiero for sale around here about a year ago. Basically, it's the only Fiero I can find. I drove it, and damn do I love it.

The only thing is, because he put money into it to replace parts, he wont let it gor for under $4000. With college in a week, $4000 is kinda steep for me. But, I love that car. It would be a huge imporvement over my Civic hatchback. So, do you guys think it's worth it?

Also, is it normal for the alternator to squeek during start-up?

depends on what the parts are that he put in and just how perfect it is. i have never spent more than $5,000 on any vehicle i own but i do all my work on the cars. my 86 SE i bought for $200 but it need a front end, one week later and with a parts car i had i have a great running car. but remember this is not your average car. it is different than most other cars built today and a lot of the newer mechanics have never even seen one never mind worked on one. so expect to do a lot of the work yourself if you want to save money.
on the other hand if you like it and want it buy it. you will love it!

$4000 is about as high as a regular, drivable Fiero gets.....unless its something special.

I think its a bit high, unless its flat-out perfect.

$4K is steep.
I'd want to see receipts, and still, it would have to be near pristine.
you can find coupes and SEs and some GTs in the papers for 1-3K.
I bought my last '88 (I have three), for $600. and that included new tires, 1/4 tank of fuel, and tax/title/license.
body and mechanically great... no trunk lock (broken out, so screwdriver trick), front end cracked by the lady who owned it (so had a neighbor put the front nose of an 85/86 on it), and the older lady also had a parrot that rode with her (so the steering wheel and driver's door panel had little chew marks on it).
paperwork in the dash had COMPLETE records from GM dealer service since mid89, and just eight months prior to me purchasing a $3000. parts and labor ticket showing new engine and clutch!
3K to 600. in a year is depreciation!
I myself would look harder, and find something in your price range, that is nearly the same.

"you can find coupes and SEs and some GTs in the papers for 1-3K."

The problem is, no, I can't. I've looked everywhere. In the local papers, in auto trader style magizines, for sale on the street, etc. I live in Illinois if that makes a difference. I might find the occasional not running SE every month, but I want a 87 or 88 GT.

Does anyone have any good websites I can look for Fieros in Illinois? The only ones I know of don't have any less then 100 miles away.

i dont think they were worth 4k$ when they were new. LOL! They can become a money pit real quik. And you have No room to work on anything. I changed a water pump in once took all damn day, and those radiator hoses, along the frame, are good about leeking. I did see one with a SB chevy in it, it had less then no room to work. Good Luck think twice. :)

Hrm. Haven't had a chance to pick up the Tribune yet. I'm looking for a manual though. :frown:

Oh, and I live in Lockport. What's a "Cruise Night" exactly?

Monday starting 6/6, Lockport Cruise Night, 6:30pm-8:30pm, Historic Downtown Lockport (8/1 Pontiac)

Downtown Lockport is a big place. I'm gonna have to do some digging around. What does the "(8/1 Pontiac)" mean?

ctesla

yeah, Lockport allows ALL Ponchos to cruise first in Aug., then following weekend will be old Buicks & Mercs, then REAL vintage rides.
usually the Street Rods and Hot Rods start this out at the end of July.

as far as the brother's friends Fiero, see if he'll take $3K
I don't want to dissuade you from buying, but there are others, or if he counters and you could pay him off instead of one lump sum, then get the title, sweet for both of you.
good luck... and don't put too much into the GT.
if you find a good '88SE (rare) or coupe, go with it, and change body panels, or just get a $5-7K kit and own a Lambo.
(then you'll definitely want the V8 conversion)

Forgive me ignorance, but what exactly do you mean by "cruise"? Meet at one place, or go a set path, or what? And do you know where in Lockport they meet at? Downtown Lockport is a big and confusing place.

sorry,
when people in America say "cruise" it usually means a social get together, at a meeting place, and then possibly a small "parade" through the streets (if it is sanctioned by the city, or a club), or it can be just several like-minded people with similar interests and vehicles going up and down a boulevard.
as far as the meeting area, I will try to get you a POC (point of contact)
with a name, number, or meeting address.

There's an 87 GT for sale in my area (Central WI) that is fully loaded, everything works, has 91,000 miles, and would score a Barret/Jackson #2. It's listing for $3200 and has been sitting all summer and hasn't sold yet. Your guy is for sure asking too high.

Yeah, there was something like that last year around me. A GT with plenty of aftermarket parts going for $3,000. Unfortunatly I haven't found another good Fiero (that's a 87 or 88 GT with a manual) since then. Hopefully those Fiero guys in the links I was given will be able to help. Still a good month away for their closer meets, a half hour drive, but worth it. Hopefully i'll find another Fiero before then.

Also i replaced the Shocks and the Struts, has a cd player out of a z71, has a stage 3 computer chip, bored out Darrel Morse Throttle Body, Runs good and is very swift. needs keys for door locks. Paint is not faded on this one, looking for 1400 or best offer, i'm VERY negotiable. Need money to pay off some bills. By the way Merrionette Park is one block south of the Chicago Boarder. I can be reached at [email protected] Thanks :)

I would NEVER own an automatic fiero again for myself and i'm speaking v-6, its nite and day from that and a manual trans. I could only see myself paying 4 grand for an 88 gt or a formula only because the suspension is better and of course it would have to be under 100,000 on the car AND it would have to be a manual with getrag tranny. :) Yes they can be a pain to work on but if you have a passion for these cars then its really no big deal because you love it! :iceslolan

Finally found my Fiero! 1,100 for a 86 GT. Just needs a new clutch. Last owner fried it because it didn't actually know how to drive a stick.

Other little things are the interior roof light is out and I need new driver's side sideview mirror glass.

Previous owner actually installed ground effects on it. So if I can make colorful lights come out of the bottom of my car, not that there's much reason to. :p

Oh, and the part of the headlight motor that tells the motor to shut off when the light is fully up, is broke. That's not too bad though. I can just keep the lights up.

All in all, I'm very pleased.
