I just recently noticed that my foot doesnt have to be on the brake to shift out of park, i know that you have to have to press the brake to shift out of park but on mine you dont have to, i was wondering what could be causing that. could something be broken?

There is an electrical solenoid that locks the shifter into place. It is possible that one of the wires to the solenoid has gone bad or the solenoid itself has died. Unless you really need this feature to work it is not critical to the operation of the vehicle. If you have small children, I recommend you get it repaired.

GTP Dad is correct. There's a shift lock solenoid which is part of the shifter assembly. The system is called BTSI. Brake Transmission Shift Interlock.

The bad part is it's part of the shifter assembly in the center console. And its expensive at the dealer but you could get one from a salvage yard. Plus you have to disassemble the center console to get to it.

The reason why it's probably in a override condition is someone (previous owner) may have jimmied it by mechanically overriding via the shift lock release button and shaft.

ohh ok, yea that seems like a real pain to get that fixed, i dont have any kids and im really the only one who drives it, ive had the car for about 2 months now so thats prolly what the previous owner did, would anyone have a pic or a link to what the part would look like? just if i ever do decide to replace it i can know what it looks like.

You have to replace the entire shifter assembly because the solenoid is built into it (thank you GM). I just had the solenoid go bad on my 97 GT and I found a shifter assembly unit at a junk yard. Cost me $40. They're $250 at the dealer. The unit is fairly easy to replace. Took me about 30 minutes.

Ain't that the truth. One man's junk is another man's treasure.

I can spend hours at a junkyard especially the ones where there's 20 salvaged Grand Prixs lined up and the guy says go out and find your own part. Feels like Christmas.

I love salvage yards too. Reminds me of a visit I had to one years ago. Went to my local salvage yard just to look around. Did'nt really need anything. Walking down one isle and there sits a '69 Dodge Charger, all primer grey, as far as I could tell only one front fender had damage. I've always loved those cars. I sat in the drivers seat to check out the interior and except for a few rips in the seat it looked in perfect shape. Then I noticed the key was in the ignition. I did'nt look under the hood yet and I thought what the hell I'll turn the key. That bad boy fired up immediately and was dying to bolt outa there! I could'nt believe it. I opened the hood and there was a 440 rumbling away. I actually felt weak I wanted this car so bad. I turned it off and ran into the office and asked how much you want for it. NOPE, NOT FOR SALE. I said what's a beautiful car like that doing in a junk yard. I dont remember why it was there but the owner of the yard said he'll get alot more for parting it out then he would selling it. About a month later I went back and there in place of that perfect car was it's skeleton. Stripped to the bone. I'll never forget it.

Yea the great thing about the one that use be by me was he not only had trucks and cars he had every thing else,
Piles of lawn mowers, refrigerators, racking, bicycles and the list went on and the guy knew where every nut and bolt was in the place.
Got wheels for my lawn mower there.

Good point about "worth more in parts" its true.

A kid I met not to long ago buys up these $500 junkers and sales the parts on Ebay and turns it into about 2 to 5k.
it pays his room and board, and school.

True about parting out cars. I just bought a totaled 02 z-06 corvette for 7 grand, parted it out and made close to 12 grand on the car.

Kinda funny how this works. One guy looked at the whole car and offered me 9500.00 for it and I refused...Glad I stuck to the original plan!!!!!!!
