Wipers park straight up

My 97 GT wipers park in the up position. They are tight on the cam, and correctly situated. When you turn them off they go to the down position for a sec, then move up straight and park there. Other than that they work fine. I have seen at least four other Grand Prixs in town with the same problem.

You could have a problem with the wiper motor reverse or at home position or try this old GP forum link that may be helpful:

Good luck!

In case you have not found out by now, there's a recall for 97 GP wiper problems.

Thanks for the input. I fixed them by bending that metal piece on the wiper motor back up to 90 degrees. As for the recall I went online at Consumer Reports but they didn't show a recall for that - but I will call them about it now - Thanks again!!

There's definately a recall on the these wipers because I own a 97 GP GT and had the work done for free at a dealership. I don't know about the GPT's, your local Pontiac dealer could tell you one way or another.

You're correct. There was a recall on certain 1997 Grand Prixs. See data below. My '97.5 GTP was manufactured after 05/97 and I never received a recall notice. The best thing to do is call Pontiac Customer Service, give them the VIN and they will let you know if you qualify.

NHTSA Campaign ID: 99V348000

Component: Visual Systems:Windshield Wiper Linkage Pivot Drive Assembly

Manufacturer: General Motors Corp

Year:
1997 Make:
Pontiac Model:
Grand Prix Recall Date:
03/25/2002

Potential Number of Units Affected: 155149
Manufactured: 03/1996 - 05/1997

Defect Summary:
The windshield wipers may stop working due to a separation between the drive pin and crescent in the crank arm assembly.

Consequence Summary:
Driver visibility could be reduced, increasing the risk of a crash.

Corrective Summary:
Dealers will inspect these vehicles for the presence of a plastic water deflector and, if necessary, replace the wiper motor crank arm and install a water deflector. On vehicles receiving a replacement crank arm and new water deflector, dealers will also apply additional sealing material to improve water deflection away from the crank arm assembly and will install a reinforcement to improve the performance of the wiper park mechanism.
