'98 Dakota Air Conditioning

OK, gearheads:

My AC pully squeals like a teenager. When the A/C is on and the A/C belt clutch is engaged, but it spins much slower than the belt (like the bearings are shot).

Can I replace the a/c belt clutch, or am I replacing the whole *$@%!* compressor??

you can replace the clutch seperately. You'll have to go to either your local parts house and rent the special tool to pull the clutch off and put it back on or go to a place like NationsRent and see if they have that tool to press it on & off. Good news is that you won't have to take off your compressor and discharge your system.

I have this same problem on my 99'' Dodge Dakota 5.2 318 4x4. Mine squeaks and whines whether I have the A/C on or off though.

I went down to AutoZone and asked them if I could just get the A/C pully and they said I had to buy the whole compressor which they priced it to be around $450-$500 after the filter they said I also needed. They told me that you can't buy the pully alone. You have to buy the whole deal is what they told me.

So, who can I go through to get the A/C pully part??? I'v looked everywhere for the part!! Is it hard to put on??? I dont know to much about trucks but I have some smart frineds in that field.

Thanks to the environmental laws, you will have on heck of a time finding the pully and/or compressor to fix your squealing.

I tried a pick and pull (disassemble you own parts from a lot), but they did not have the right years (my 98 was way to new).

I did find the pully and compressor, by calling around to used parts places. I bought both the compressor and pully for $100, which was worth it not to go to the dealer. I only replaced the pully.

The process is easy. You should be able to find the instructions on the net. I can email them to you if you wish ([email protected]).
