Transmission range mode sensor question

Hi,
My 94 has developed a bad slipping problem - when it warms up, infact its not driveable --- slips in all gears.
I was reading through some prior posts: '...to check to see if the shift lever indicator reads the same as the (lighted) one on the dash'. Well - on my dash the transmission light is completely off --- that is too say, no matter what gear, no light comes on. Its just dark.
Any idea if this is a clue to the problem???

have you cleaned the sensor yet? This may at the least fix your slipping problem and maybe other related problems. I would do that and see what happens. I cleaned mine and the slipping stopped, but I never had a problem with the shifting indicators working improperly.
Don't forget to put at least one chalk under one of the tires, especially if you're parked on an incline. I almost learned the hard way.

94's don't have a dashboard shift indicator. The information you read pertains to newer Rodeo's. I think that some newer Rodeo people here kinda forget about us older Rodeo people.

Thanks - question: the trans shift ok when its cold but slips like crazy when warm. 'It seems' to be selecting the gears correctly. If that is the case --- code the range mode snsor be the culprit behind slipping - or do you think I have a bigger problem?

I had a similar problem with my 2000. During the winter the transmission shifts quite nicely, but during the summer months it has a mind of it's own. The grease surrrounding the Trans Mode Switch turns liquidy and causes the erratic shifting. I had it serviced at my Isuzu dealer for $362.00 and now the erratic shifting is gone.

I'm not sure that a 94 even has a range mode sensor. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. +98 Rodeos are different in alot of ways other than looks.
Did you properly check the fluid level? Trans warmed up and in park or neutral.

It does have a sensor, but I started to remove it and I am afraid I might break the connector. In any case, when its cold it shifts (and locates) through the gears correctly. I am going to check the fluid again. The rip off artists in my town quoted $3400; $3800; $4200 for a rebuilt installed. No one would even daignose it (since I don't think they know how) --- alll they want to do is change parts out. In a prior post some one suggested a Phoenix Reman Trans --- called them and they have one for $950.
Does any one have any suggestions on how I can finally diagnose the need to replace this? Again, its runs cold, starts to slip and grab when warming then slips completely when hot.
'Could it be some thing as simple as a clogged filter - that a good cleaning would correct?'

Yep. All 4L30E's have them. You will find pretty much any electronic AT will have a range switch to send a signal to the TCM.
