Highlander 4 cyl does get better city mpg and better highway mpg for 2wd. I get 1-2 mpg better than EPA highway but I also don't go faster than 5 mph above the limit and do not accelerate fast. All city driving I get 19-20 mpg. Consumer Reports stated Pilot got 26 mpg highway a few years ago. Also depends on whether you get 4wd or 2wd. 4wd 4 cyl Highlander gets 19/25 EPA mpg. If you're looking for 3rd row seat in Highlander, can't get it with 4cyl 4wd and some areas can't get it 4cyl 2wd. Pilot is wider and longer and comes standard with 3rd seat for claimed 8 passengers. I think Pilot now also comes with side airbags as standard.

very good answers. I do not want a 3rd seat. I feel very sure I will get the highlander. After checking, I found the honda pilot to be more expensive and has options that I don't want. Thanks for good reply

Correction on 4 cyl 4wd mileage, it's 20/25 mpg. The 6 cyl 2wd gets 19/25 mpg.
