Hi, I just randomly found this site on the internet and it has already been very informative. I recently purchased a 77 Cutlass Supreme and I have a problem w/ the emergency brakes. The cables are fine but the pedal wont ratchet down when you push it, it just pushes in and then springs back as soon as you let your foot off. Has anyone ever had this problem and what did you do to fix it? Thanks alot.

look to make sure the firewall insulation has not gotten in between the pedal and 'ratchet' locking mechanism.
my problem on a '73 Chevelle is that cogged locking device is only tack welded, and it actually broke free, and was just hanging below the pedal.
I just drilled out the weld, and ran a bolt and nut through it.

hope this helps,

Thanks I appreciate the help but I just fixed it yesterday evening. I tried to take the whole assembly off but was unsuccessful so I said to myself, "What the heck", and sprayed some oil on it and gave it a few loving whacks w/ a hammer. Unbelievably, it just started working. lol Always respect the power of a hammer. :)
