Replacing the column switch (91 Regal)

My fiance has a 91 Regal and when she uses the right turn signal there is a little wiff of smoke that comes from the steering column. I'm thinking that there is just a bare wire on the switch because all the other functions work fine. I've replaced switches on a couple other vehicles but they all had columns that could be taken apart in two pieces. I kind of tore into it and it looks like I've got to take the steering wheel off. Is this true? Is it just that one nut that holds the wheel on or do I need a specialty tool?
