tib 2000 catalytic converter what the hell...

hey there....

i need help from my fellow tib lovers.....

i have a 2000 2.0 automatic tiburon.

i'm having issues with my catalytic converter. or well, one of them. there are two on my model, one that is welded to the manifold, and another further back. i THINK that my car was manufactured this way for california emissions. but that's just me guessing.
if anyone knows the real reasoning for me having two, please share!

anyway, my rear catalytic converter broke. a piece was either knocked loose or somehow the thing got too hot and it cracked. i dont really know.

point being: i need to replace it for my emissions inspection so i can re-register. i cant find a single after-market one available and i'm not really interested in paying the 700 or 800 for a Hyundai brand one. it's funny because it looks identical to the elantra catalytic converter, but i guess i can't use that one.... or can i?

any sort of insights to this are GREATLY appreciated.

im guessing you already went to the dealership to get a quote for everything... try going to an audio shop and ask what they think/ can do about it....

If you are still under your 100k mile warranty, take it into the dealership. I am not positive, but I think your year, 2000, is covered for a recall or w/e they did for the Tib Exhhaust problems. I know 2001 owners had letters sent to them, just cant remember if 2000 was included. Huyndai had problems with parts of the Exhaust cracking, so they told people to bring in the car and it would be fixed free of cost. Check into it and let us know how things go.

Only the exhaust manifolds have a recall. They crack at the bottom left right behind the heat shield. The Cat doesn't have a recall on it, however you might beable to get one for free by going to the dealership. It should be under warrenty. Let me know how it goes cuz I thought my cat was screwed up also. I have a 00 Tib. As far as looking for an aftermarket cat. I work at Checker so I could look it up and see if one can be special ordered and I'll give you a quote on it.

well, i dont think the warranty applies to me, as i am the second owner of the vehicle....maybe i should look through all of my paperwork.

it'd be awesome if you could look that up for me...

it came to mind today that i could perhaps call up some junkyards and see if they have any salvaged from other tibs.

thanks guys for your help... =)

As far as I know, the 100k warranty doesnt stop covering the vehicle if a legal change of title owner occurs. I could be wrong, but I am the second owner of my car, and I am able to use the warranty should I need it.

Yes it applies to 2nd owners. Doesn't matter if you're the 2nd owner or 6th owner just as long as you're under 100k miles. Take it to dealership see what they say...meanwhile i need to go to work and I'll look up that cat for you.

Alright. The guy at the dealership may have lied to me then. But anyway...

I found out how much a Catalytic Converter is. You can get one from Checker Auto Parts/Schucks/Kragen. It's all the same company, it just depends on where in the U.S. you're at. It is a Magnaflow Catalytic Converter (rear). It is $85.99 w/ a 1 year limted warranty. The part # is 53004. Just walk in and hand them that part number. They will have to special order it from Magnaflow. Now depending on where you live it could take up to a week, but it's usually 3-4 days. If they have any questions, tell them to call my Work at 303-660-3303. Hope that helps.

good news and bad news....

bad news first:

Rear Converter [Exc. Calif. OBDII] N/A 53004 N/A

the magnaflow part you found can't work for me because I need a California OBDII. Massachusetts maintains California emissions laws and after-market replacements of OBD II's are illegal. That is why i haven't found any after-market options!

GOOD NEWS:
and this should help out anyone else that needs to replace this damn part:
"Find Part"
out of Saratoga Springs, NY has a few refurbished and warrantied OBD II california emissions standard cats available for my Hyundai Tiburon 2000 2.0L automatic for 175.00. I am sure they have other OBD II's available for other models. The lady I talked to said they have a guy who specializes in this sort of thing and makes these available.
I found this company via junkyarddog.com

Hope this helps u all too for future reference.... Thanks again for your efforts, guys!
