Nitrous Oxide

Hi,

I know that large amounts of "NOS" is a good way to destroy your car but I've heard that if you just use small amounts it doesn't affect the reliability of your engine. Well, what's the real truth on "NOS"? Is it reliable in small amounts or is small amounts just as bad as a big amount?

It depends on the engine, whatever engine you put it in, you should research it first to see if you can run any at all in it. Most engines can take small increments. Just remember anytime you put something like this in your engine without the proper adjustments such as timing and whatnot it can hurt your engine, if you dont know what you're doing you can seriously damage the engine. And please, call it N2O, or Nitrous, not NOS..NOS is a brand not the product.

It can be as safe as you make it. I'm only on a 100 wet shot right now with no detonation problems/fuel pressure issues. I've got my holley fuel pump here, and as soon as I have the time to drop the tank.....in go the 150 pills. Timing was slightly adjusted for the 100 shot and colder plugs were installed, as well as lowering the gap slightly. Only thing I'm going to do differently for the 150 shot(besides the upgraded fuel pump) is lower the timing a tad more. I did lose a little off of my all motor passes with the colder plugs and reduced timing, but better safe than sorry.

I'm using a wide open switch(only activates the nitrous at wide open throttle), a fuel pressure safety switch(as long as the fuel pressure is up, the nitrous will activate), and a msd window switch set to activate at 3000rpms and shut off at 6400rpms. This keeps driver error out of the factor(so I don't spray too early or too long).

With enough safety devices, nitrous can be a friendly power adder. :biggrin:

As with any power adder, tuning is the key to reliable performance. Good fuel supply/control and timing control will keep your engine running strong and reliable.

I had an Edelbrock Nitrous Oxide system in my former Z28. It was a dry kit, and just shot into the lid. To be honest I hated it. I kept having to refill it, not because I was burning rubber, but because the stupid bottle kept leaking. I had it sent to Edelbrock for repairs after the Speed Shop I purchased it from gave up on it. They repaired it, but then the heat outside eventually got to it, and it exploded rather violently in the back of my Z28. It sounded like a fog horn. Luckily I had a blow down tube. When I traded the car in I just left the kit w/ the car. I wouldn't get one unless you are gonna buy a blanket for it, as it will both heat it up, and keep it cool in the summer time. Great power overall (I took 8 tenths of a sec. off and over 7 mph in the 1/4 mile). I'd get a cam if I were you though.

yeah man nitrous is a reliable horsepower adder its just all these morons who think they're little civic can handle a 150 shot that blow up their damn cars. For the most part though any car should be able to handle a 50 shot at least not one thats completely ancient and a POS of course. I have a 75 shot on a 1999 nissan sentra and I havn't had any problems at all
