Laying out my rough pencil to transfer and ink.
Got hired to draw all the VW models for my local dealer.

This will be traced again and it'll be fixed up. Inking comes tonight then scan and render in Photoshop.

Mostly freehand...I used an elipse set to go over my sketched wheel lines. (The rear actually needs to be tweaked.) You can see how many times I go over something till it has the attitude I'm after. I used a few straight edges to shore up the body lines and the rest is just stylized shapes.
Oh...I used a light table! lolol
I guess that means this won't make a super summer blockbuster but it'll do great on DVD.
Just heard from the customer and I may have to do another one of the 06...no problem.

Yeah it's the old version. The new version has a much better design.
I like your work, i's very clean and has a great perspective... headlights are weired...
So you will draw a Golf / Jetta / Touareg too?
What about Fox, New Beetle Touran and Pheaton? would be a lot work... have fun!!

In Illy when I layout my lines I can compensate for size easily. The overall height of the front tire is small too so after I get it traced I'll scale it up a notch then make sure all my outlines are the right size.

This wasn't intended as a WIP so I'll just throw up the major stuff.
If I was gonna hand ink this I would transfer to my inking paper and leave notes all over so when I came at it with my tools I'd know what I was thinking. The computer gives me the ability to think on the fly and know that nothing is permanent.
It would normally take about 2 hours to ink. I'm thinkin I can knock this out in Illy in about 45 minutes...lol....we'll see.

jk
The VW logo seems to be a little... um... what's the word... flat?
The logo is too perfect, and it has no angle. If you remove the rest of the rim, it looks like it's facing you directly. The center line of the logo needs to be moved rearward a little.
Otherwise, it's PERFECT

when I move it to photoshop and render those things get added.
no color in Illy just line. PS makes the magic.
Remember it's kinda toony so reality doesn't carry much weight on this one. The client is the VW dealer in town so seeing their logo straight is good for them.
Thanx for the input.

p.s. filter distort spherize in PS just slightly on the logo will wrap it nicely. That's why the logo is on it's own Illy layer.
oh yeah one more thing.
http://www.brandsoftheworld.com is art submitted by artists. What most do is find the logos they want then put them on the car. When you get race car jobs with all those stickers that the customer is very very picky about you will thank whomever you thank that brands of the world is there...trust me.
There are also several cds of clipart logos you can purchase. many Illustrators store files and files of logos.. Saves time....and time is money...believe me.

Still got some tweaks but it has possibilities.

Thanks all
take notes here comes the fun stuff:
Decided to render the NB tonight. I figured I worked on the lineart last night...I deserve a reward!...right? :p
Anyway in this capture you can see I'm in PS now and I got a few channels set up. One is just blackline only. Then blackline and selection araeas, and the third is black tones. I did add a 4th so I could start to add some greys. Once again I'm using a limited pallet cause i hope to get my customer to print these on shirts as well as in magazines or whatever...(you can never have too many VW shirts...that's a rule)
anyway here's render pic 1.
http://www.58vw.com/af/nbclr1.jpg
oh I made the grill guts by drawing a rounded corner square in Illy then rotating it 90 degrees. Then I squashed it a tad with the scale tool and then made a duplicate copy of it behind it. I moved the duplicate down and over and grouped everything. Then I made a copy of the grill shape and used it to mask off the grill pattern. Masking is awesome!! You can make things fit into places they wouldn't normally. Also works magic on hilights.
Just FYI

no sweat ghetto7o2azn,
you can apply the same methods to layers.
I choose channels cuz I want to be like Jeri
http://www.motorsportsillustrated.com
If I was rendering in layers with a limited pallet I would define the colors ahead of time and maybe set my swatches on a layer so I could select colors with the eye dropper and then render that way.
Jeri has a couple great tutorials on how to do what I'm doin. If she can teach a lunk head like me I know she can teach a sharp tack like all the folks on this board.

Umm... lemorris there's one question I'd like to ask... I saw high performance racing New Beetle yesterday, I used to hate these cars but this one looked really cool, huge rims, lowered, diffusor with included chrome exhausts, huge wing but no "tuning look" just "racing style". Do you, as a '58 Beetle driver accept those New Beetles? i rather thought you would not.
Great illustration by the way!!

First I gotta tell you...Magliano is a great name! Man with a name like that you can do anything!
I'd have Magliano Cologne...I'd have commercials advertising the fact that we only use the finest grapes for the finest people in our Magliano Merlot (wine). Oh! The new Hi-top Magliano by Nike...don't leave the atmosphere without it. Naturally you could have a full set of rims...From spin to street win, Maglianos got-cho back...and last but not least I think you need your own noodle. I can see the TV chefs coming up with great ways to cook with feta cheese, stewed tomatoes and Maglianos.
Seriously...I think your name rocks.
Now...to answer your question.
After I traced my pencil drawing in Illustrator I printed it out. I found some reference of a New Beetle that had interesting shapes and I threw stylized interpretations on my drawing.
http://www.58vw.com/af/nbhi.jpg
You can see the pencil lines I roughed over. Really they are just shapes. I don't try to make them realistic...I just come semi close to the general area. I don't think about the subtle changes cause I know this is a graphic and what is real doesn't drive the final...what feels good does. I think about round corners and hard edges. I also consider critical tangents...that's when a shape intersects with another shape and the point of contact lands on say a corner or where a headlight starts. I don't want my shapes to collide visually like that.
Learning to simplify comes from imitating what is real and then throwin a little funk-twist into it. I know that the reflections on the drawing would not be real unless this car was sitting under a leggo sculpture of a giant jack-in-the box by a banana tree, but the fact that the viewer will look at the drawing longer and see shapes and feel space means you invoke more emotion and response. That's the reason I'm not centering the rim...if it's like you always see you see...without looking.....get it?
oh here's the latest:

sorry for being long-winded but I learn when people do that for me so this is a scratch back.

Yes, beautiful work! I've done illustrations that way, but I'm not that adept in Illo, so it takes me a while. I have to complete one piece a week comprised of several cars and one or two portraits, so for me, it's quicker to draw it out and then colour in Photoshop. I'd like to spend more time doing vector drawings though, looking at your work, the results are worth it.
