recommendations for hard disk

alright yall, i'm basically doing a quick little upgrade to my PC. i bought a DVD burner and am going to be putting in more RAM. i also need a bigger hard drive. i have two that i'm looking at one is a Western Digital 120 gig. the other is a Seagate 160 gig. i've read reviews that with the Seagate windows only see 150 gigs.

both are the same price, after rebates and everything. i also heard the Seagate runs quiter. Anyone have any preferences or any suggestions?

Kinda a simple answer..go with the 160/150 one. Hell its cheaper, more space, quieter, whats not to like?!

yeah, the general consensus I've come across is that Seagates are the best choice in that bracket, followed by Western Digital, then maybe Maxtor or something (I personally have never had a problem with Maxtor reliability, but I know a couple friends have)

Go for performance - get a WD Raptor.

Go with the Seagate no doubt and btw all drives will show as having less space to windows that they are advertised. This is due to a discrepancy between Microsoft and the drive manufacturers in how they measure space.


if your computer supports it make sure its SATA with NCQ. This makes a significant advantage just as an example i benchmarked my 80GB 8MB sata ncq seagate vs my 250GB 16MB buffer pata maxtor and the seagate has higher sustained rates despite the clearly lower area density of a 80giger.


as far as the raptors go yes they are fast but also too bloody expensive. Heck with a bit more i would go for some refurbished 15K cheetahs.

I got a 200gb maxtor diamondmax from staples a few months ago for 60 bucks after rebates. I couldnt pass up that deal.

I'd used maxtor WD and seagate,a and all have been reliably, with the exception of one maxtor which got fried by a faulty power supply

I had a WD die after ~2-3 months.

i went with the seagat. i figure 40 bucks after rebates isn't too bad.
