I'm thinking of buying a new Beetle. Just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on performance and reliability. I'm looking at a few 1.8 turbos. I would also like to know what the difference is in a turbo and a turbo s.

consumer reports doesnt think highly of its reliability. but i think they are keen. im about half a year from inhereting my mum's as a college grad present.
having driven the older 1.8t with a reported 150 hp, i can say they are plesantly quick. they feel a little choked up, so a free flow exhaust, and intake are in order.
it handles suprisingly well...at least better than my 91 prelude but that might have something to do with the enormously wide "sport package" tires.
its not gonna smoke any vette's or anything, but it should last you a while and be plenty of fun.

Great Car. Mine's a 2000 gls turbo manual. fast nimble. electrical is a bit querky. Mine's 150 hp, the turbo s is 180 hp. 2005 is the last year of the turbo. 2006 is 5 cylinder 150 hp but no more turbo.

All i can say is that I love my 2000 beetle. I spend a lot of time on maintainance, but at the end of the day it is a great car.
