1986 GT Stalling

New to this forum and new to the mustang..I have a 86 GT, the battery died earlier today and the car was not running smooth at all and running very hot. I have replaced the battery so the start up problem has been rectified, however the idle is between 750 and 250 rpm and the engine is running rough. I took the car around the block and it stalled out 4 times and I had to have the rpms high so that I could make it back. When I start it the car runs and then just dies out?? The temp gauge was ok not too hott so hopefully that was a fluke or do to the battery issue. Any suggestions would be great...I am thinking it could be the alternator maybe the thermostat?? Thanks in advance for any help.

I had the same thing happen on my 88gt My problem was the hose that connects from the back of the intake manifold and goes to the air flow sensor (mounted on firewall above engine) had cracked. Check yours making sure that its on and not cracked. If thats not it let us know. Good LUck

was it running ok before you put the battery in ? was the old battery going completely dead? were you constantly jumping it?

Yes the car was running good until the battery, it is stalling out and sounds as if it is backfiring. I had to have it jumped again after putting a new battery in it. Now the car won't start. My guess is the alternator or ignition module however that would not contribute to the rough idle and lack of power.

Might want to check all your vaccum hoses. Make sure you don't have a cracked plactic T or one of the plastic lines. You may have accidently pulled a hose loose when you replaced battery.
Good luck

could also be your intake manifold gasket. also double check the CCA(cold craking amps) on the battery to make sure you got the corect battery. somtimes if you get a too small of one or one that's made for a 4cyl it'll tend to crap out and were out your alt.
myfriend has the same problem with his 86 gt (he also has a beefed up 89 gt motor and efi system) but he's fixed it once then it started doing it again recently. can't remeber what it was though.

Possible head gasket too.
Check radiator fluid for oil and oil for water.
You say it's backfiring. Is this just an isolated one time thing or does it do it all the time, as in when you attempt to accelerate. On acceleration does it pop, pop, pop or just every once in a while. Is it out the exhaust or back up into the intake.
On older motors with a lot of miles sometimes you can burn a valve. What this does is it creates a leak between the valve and the valve seat. This allows the valve to stay partially open when the plug fires and the gases excape through this area. This would also help to create your loss of power. If it's an exhaust valve it will backfire out the exhaust and intake through the intake.
There's a lot of possibilities here. :banghead:
