92 Caravan 3.3L engine cooling fan question

The main engine cooling fan on the wifes 92 Caravan with 3.3L was working, I saw it running in the past. Then the fan bearings went bad and the van overheated on her on a day when it was heat index of 112 degrees. I checked the fan after she babied it home and saw that there was play in the bearings and it was hard to turn, so I replaced the fan motor with a new one from Autozone.

The van has not overheated since ( we have not had any days that hot though) but I am curious as to whether the new fan motor is working properly.
My Haynes says that for the 3.3L if you remove the wire going to the engine temp sending unit on the passenger side of the front head, that when you turn the key on the fan will start.

Mine does not. I even tried grounding the sending unit wire to the negative of the battery, and although the temp gauge goes all the way to the overheat position, even if I start the engine the fan does not start.

I checked the fuse in the fuse box at the drivers lower knee position, and it is good.

The fan for the A/C is working properly.

Am I unplugging the wrong wire to test the cooling fan? The Haynes manual is a little vauge and states that there are different applications for different models and I am wondering if I am missing something.

There is not a sensor in the thermostat housing and I do not see any other sensors right off hand that go into the head.

I know if I unhooked the 2 wires comming from the fan itself, and ran them directly to the battery it will work but I am trying to see if the electric fan cooling system itself works.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I took the van out for a nice long drive and popped the hood while it was running and am confident that the fan is working properly.

But I would still like to know what wire I am supposed to unhook to test the system.

There are two temperature sensors - one has a single wire connector and controls the temperature gauge only. The other has a two wire connector and controls the cooling fans. This is the one you need to disconnect to test the fans.

UNDER HOOD, PASSENGER SIDE, UPPER ENGINE AREA, FRONT OF WATER OUTLET, MOUNTED IN INTAKE MANIFOLD

Thank you, I will give it another look and find the sensor that I have missed

we have the similer problem. Our berring on motor went out so we got new fan and motor. We hooked it up but the fan doesn't come on. When hooked to the battery it runs fine. What switches and relays control the fan? Where are they located? If the two wire sensors by the thermostate housing controls the fan, how can one test it's operation? It appears to be 5 volts going to it. Pls help.

PS. We also have 92 dodge Grand caravan, 3.3 liter.

Did you check the fuse inside the passenger compartment near the drivers left knee and make sure the fan fuse is not blown?

Im sorry, I seem to have been mistaken about that particular fuse, it seems that it is for the inside heater / AC fan beneath the dash.

I am pretty sure that there is a relay for the fan though on the drivers side in the engine compartment near the battery.

I am not sure which one it is or any test that could be done, hopefully someone with more experience with these vans will hop in and help.

Good luck!
